Second_TempleSince the Three Weeks remember the falling of the Holy Temple, it seems appropriate to provide a little background on what the Holy Temple was and why its destruction has left such a lasting impact on the Jewish people.

destruction_temp_2_galleryToday marked the 1,940th annual remembrance of the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem by the Roman empire. This day, the 17th of Tammuz on the Hebrew calendar, is a day which remembers the beginning of the mourning period known as “The Three Weeks.” The period concludes on July 30th this year at sundown (the 9th of Av on the Hebrew calendar), which is the day that the Holy Temple was set aflame. There are many additional reasons that we mourn during this three week period, as well as unique customs that are followed as part of the remembrance.
